In 2016, Arjun Sharma was in his final year of engineering. He had good grades, real research experience, and a clear dream of studying abroad. But when it came time to write his statement of purpose, he got stuck. For three months, he wrote and rewrote, sure that if he worked hard enough, the words would come. The rejections still arrived.
It wasn't until later, after he made it into a master's program in Canada, that he understood what had gone wrong: no one had ever taught him how to frame his own life as a compelling story. And he wasn't the only one. When two classmates asked for help with their applications, he saw the same thing happen again. Smart, capable students from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and other developing regions were underselling themselves — not because they lacked talent, but because advocating for yourself in a Western academic context is a skill no one teaches.
So in 2017, from a tiny apartment in Kathmandu with just a laptop and a shared Google Doc, he started SOPmandu. The idea was simple: if you've worked hard enough to dream of studying abroad, you deserve help telling that story well.
What began as helping a few friends has grown into something much larger. Over fifteen thousand students later, across more than thirty countries, the mission hasn't changed. It's still about making sure your story doesn't get left behind.
